If what Emma had overheard when she came downstairs that morning was any indication, they were in for an interesting day.
“You want to do what?” Noah asked.
“Just go into town, and have you ready to meet us if anything suspicious happens,” Tyler replied.
Emma winced. Uh, oh. It didn’t seem like her idea was going over too well.
“What are my dad and Uncle Noah fighting about?” Luke asked from beside her. She’d had to clear up the concept of aunts and uncles with him since he didn’t have any others and hadn’t been initially sure what to call the other adults, but he seemed to understand now.
“They’re not fighting, bud. They’re just talking.”
“If he’s busy talking how is he going to make me pancakes?”
“I can make them.”
“I told you, yours aren’t as good.” Luke wrinkled his nose. “Sorry, Mom. Dad is the pancake king.”
Emma laughed. “Okay, then, we’ll ask him if he can make them when he’s done talking.”
“Are you staying here today?”
“No, I need you to stay with Aunt Summer and Aunt Kate again. Can you do that?”
He shrugged. “I guess. I wish I could play outside, though.” His eyes moved to the window. “Can I today?”
Emma shook her head. “Sorry, sweetheart, not yet. There’s still someone... Someone is still really angry at me for some reason. I don’t want them to try to hurt you.”
“No one’s going to hurt me. You worry too much.” And then he was off, running through the lodge toward the kitchen. Kate waved at her from where Luke stopped, signaling that she had him under control. Flashing her a grateful smile, Emma took a quick detour to the living room, where she’d heard Noah and Tyler talking, to see if she could help convince Noah it was a great idea.
“She wants to help, Noah.”
Emma walked up to them, took her stand next to Tyler. “I really do. Please let me do this.”
Noah glared at his brother again then directed his glare to her. “This was really your idea?”
“Yes.”
He seemed to think about it for a second or two and then finally shrugged, his posture relaxing. “Okay, fine. If it’s something you want to do, and if this really isn’t anything more than a walk around town...”
“That’s all. Really.”
“All right. Where are you planning to go?”
Emma looked to Tyler. She hadn’t come up with that much of a game plan yet.
“I was thinking about the harbor,” Tyler answered.
Noah nodded. “Okay, nice and close to the station. I like it. Call me if you notice anything.”
“Got it.”
“I’ve got to head into work. Erynn’s already called me this morning.”
“Just to chat?” Tyler teased.
Noah’s expression stayed straight-faced. “No idea what you’re talking about. She called with a question about the case and I can’t let her get the idea that she and the troopers are the only ones working this.”
“I’m not even going to argue with you.”
Noah waved goodbye and headed out.
“What was that about Trooper Cooper?” Emma asked.
Tyler laughed. “She and my brother have made police work a competition.
